The goal in brief
GoalGreenhouse gases leaving the air as fast as we add them, so global temperatures stop rising.
Why it matters
Earth was 1.44°C warmer in 2025 than in 1850 to 1900,1 and carbon dioxide in the air reached a record 423.9 ppm in 2024.2 Countries’ current plans would cut emissions only about 12% by 2035, far short of the 55% cut needed to hold warming to 1.5°C.3
How we’ll know it’s done
- Finish line
- Net-zero emissions by 2050, the pace needed to hold warming to 1.5°C as the Paris Agreement calls for.3
- What counts
- Net emissions: what we release, minus what forests, soils and proven technology durably take back out.
- How it’s checked
- Countries’ emissions reports under the UN climate treaty, checked against measured CO₂ in the air and global temperature records.
- Our part
- We’ll fund this once our vetting team vets an organization working on it.
What follows
- Heat waves, floods and droughts stop getting worse.H-14Establish a global resilience fund for disaster relief and prevention
- Oceans absorb less new carbon dioxide, slowing acidification.O-07Rebalance ocean pH to 8.2 (eliminate ocean acidification)
- Farmers spared ever-rising heat and drought.H-01Eliminate global hunger and malnutrition
- Coral reefs spared further warming, giving them a chance to recover.O-06Protect and regenerate key ocean ecosystems
