Why it matters

Around 680 million people live in low-lying coastal zones, a number expected to pass one billion by 2050.1 Mangroves alone prevent more than $65 billion in flood damage to property each year,2 yet half of the mangrove ecosystems assessed worldwide are at risk of collapse.3

How we’ll know it’s done

Finish line
15 million hectares of mangroves secured by 2030, the Mangrove Breakthrough target,4 with salt marshes and other coastal wetlands spreading again.
What counts
Mangroves and marshes that take root and survive, not just seedlings planted.
How it’s checked
Satellite maps from Global Mangrove Watch, plus survival counts at restoration sites.
Our part
Our Veritree campaign reports the mangroves and trees it plants each month.

How it can be solved

The approaches to this goal, and how many of the organizations taking each one we’ve vetted.

  • Mangrove restoration

Replanting mangroves, which shelter coasts from storms and store carbon.

    3 organizations · 1 vetted

  • Coastal restoration funding

Funding the restoration of kelp, seagrass, mangroves and reefs along coasts.

Who’s working on it

We only call a solution proven, measurable and scalable once our vetting team has vetted it. Everything else here, the team is tracking.

Vetted1 organizationReviewed by our vetting team, and passed all three tests.

  • Proven

It has worked, with results to show.

  • Measurable

    Its impact can be counted.

  • Scalable

It can grow toward the size of the goal.

Listing an organization isn’t an endorsement. Not vetted means just that: our vetting team is tracking it, and we make no claims about it yet. Last reviewed October 2026.
