Why it matters

273 million children and young people are out of school, a number that has risen seven years running, and in low- and middle-income countries about 70% of 10-year-olds can’t understand a simple written text.12 Schooling gives children the skills to earn a living and raise healthy families, and it is one of the main ways families climb out of poverty.

How we’ll know it’s done

Finish line
Every girl and boy completes free, quality primary and secondary school and learns, as SDG target 4.1 calls for by 2030.3
What counts
Children who finish school able to read, write and do maths, not just names on a register.
How it’s checked
UNESCO counts of children out of school, completion rates, and national learning assessments.
Our part
Our campaign reports the days of education it funds each month.
