The goal in brief

GoalEveryone has a safe, decent home they can afford.

people lacking adequate housing1
2.8 billion
people in slums or informal settlements3
1.16 billion
average share of income spent on housing2
31%

Why it matters

About 2.8 billion people lack adequate housing, and another 300 million have no stable shelter at all.1 A safe home that a family can afford is the base for health, schooling and steady work.

How we’ll know it’s done

Finish line
Adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services for everyone, with slums upgraded, as SDG target 11.1 calls for by 2030.2
What counts
A home with secure tenure, safe water and sanitation, enough space, and a cost the household can carry.
How it’s checked
UN-Habitat’s count of people in slums, informal settlements or inadequate housing (SDG indicator 11.1.1), and what share of income households spend on housing.
Our part
We’ll fund this once our vetting team vets an organization working on it.

What follows

  • Families with secure homes can save, borrow and build income.H-02End poverty
  • Running water and toilets reach neighborhoods that lack them today.H-03Establish universal access to clean drinking water
  • Fewer illnesses spread by crowding, damp and poor sanitation.H-15End disease
  • Sturdier homes that stand up to floods, storms and earthquakes.H-14Establish a global resilience fund for disaster relief and prevention

How it can be solved

Who’s working on it

We only call a solution proven, measurable and scalable once our vetting team has vetted it. Everything else here, the team is tracking.

Vetted0 organizationsReviewed by our vetting team, and passed all three tests.

  • Proven

It has worked, with results to show.

  • Measurable

    Its impact can be counted.

  • Scalable

It can grow toward the size of the goal.

Not vetted6 organizationsTracked by our vetting team. Not vetted yet, so we make no claims about them.

Listing an organization isn’t an endorsement. Not vetted means just that: our vetting team is tracking it, and we make no claims about it yet. Last reviewed October 2026.
