The goal in brief
GoalA standing global fund that pays for disaster prevention and gets help to people fast when disaster strikes.
Why it matters
Disasters affected an average of 123 million people a year over the past decade, and the share of people affected has more than doubled since the decade before.1 Preparing ahead pays off, since 24 hours’ warning can cut damage by up to 30%,2 but only 60% of countries report having warning systems for multiple hazards.3
How we’ll know it’s done
- Finish line
- Everyone on Earth covered by early warning systems, the UN target for the end of 2027,2 backed by a standing fund that pays for prevention and pays out fast after disasters.
- What counts
- Money in place before disaster strikes, for warnings, safer buildings and fast payouts, not only appeals afterward.
- How it’s checked
- Early warning coverage tracked by WMO and the UN, and the disaster deaths and losses countries report under the Sendai Framework.
- Our part
- We’ll fund this once our vetting team vets an organization working on it.
